The principal of “repair by crisis” generally means a much larger repair bill and a lengthier stay at the repair shop.
This principal operates in conjunction with Murphy’s Law, which can be beaten with an annual service.
Fuel
- To ensure correct starting and power use “fresh” fuel in a fresh container. “Fresh” fuel has a maximum life of two months. Modern fuels “go off” very quickly.
- 2 stroke fuel- It is imperative to shake the can every time before decanting.
Oils
- Four stroke engines in mowers and other such equipment require that the oil be drained and replaced. (does not apply to two strokes because the oil is mixed with the fuel)
- The oil should be replaced every 25 hours of operation or at least once a year
- In S E Queensland we strongly recommend only oil suitable for tropical climate be used - SAE 30, not multigrade oils used in motor cars.
- We stock SAE 30 oils in small containers.
General
- Ensure grass and leaves are removed from around the engine.
- Air circulation around the engine is critical in maintaining correct operating temperature.
- Dry grass and leaves around the engine can ignite during operation or when stored in your shed or under the house.
- Air filters should be cleaned every eight hours of operation in dusty conditions.
